Ideas for homemade wedding invitations
Making hand-made wedding invitations can be a rewarding and cost-cutting exercise in the lead up to your big day, and the perfect way to take some time out and relax while getting creative with friends.
They are the first impression of your wedding that your guests will get, so you want them to represent the feel of your wedding as best you can. Designing and making them yourself is the best way to ensure that they are exactly what you want. It can be as simple as choosing good quality colored card and adding the wording yourself, to creating and writing out your very own hand-decorated individual invitations.
Here are some ideas to get you started creating beautiful and original homemade wedding invitations.
Simple Wedding Invitations
The simplest way to get started with wedding invites is to choose a color theme (one that fits in well with your plans for the big day) and create some printable wedding invitations on your computer. Unless you have a printer that is capable of handling thicker card though, you might want something a little less flimsy.
Some very good quality card, either in your chosen color or one that will complement it well (you can always add ribbon or other decorative details later) can serve to make the invites look a lot more impressive. You can then design a printable paper insert and glue it inside the folded card – add some decorative touches to the front (suggestions below) and you’re done!
Photo wedding invitations
Adding a photograph of the happy couple is a great personal touch and need not be too difficult or expensive. You can get photo wedding cards and invites made, or have a go at designing them yourself. Choose a favourite snap of the two of you looking happy, or get a friend to take one, and get started. Many home printers will print good quality photographs straight from your computer and these be glued carefully onto the front of your card to make your invitations all about you.
You could even take this a step further and create a montage of several favourite photos – this should be fairly simple to accomplish with free photo editing software.
Personalised wedding invitations
If you are writing out your invitations yourself, either by hand or on the computer, then you can ensure that they are personalised to the recipients. Depending on how formal you want them to appear you can add a personal message. For a smaller wedding you could show off your artistic talent by designing individual invitations for each of your guests. Your invitations will feel more personal and show that you know your guests, and are not just including them from a feeling of duty.
Color themed wedding invitations
If you have chosen a color theme for your wedding day then you will want the invitations to represent this. Good quality colored card is the most obvious way to do so but there are other options. Adding a piece of ribbon to a plain cream or light colored card can have the same effect, as can good quality colored ink. Dried and pressed flowers and lace can also be used to add a little something extra.
More Unusual Wedding Invitations
If you’re feeling extra creative of a little bit adventurous then there are plenty more ideas you could try to really go all out to make really creative wedding invites. Your photo montage could be made with pictures and words; you could add something to represent the theme of your wedding day, tartan for a Scottish connection for example, or seashells for beach wedding invitations; you could add some poetry or a line of quotation that you think sums up your big day. Once you get started there really are plenty of ways to personalise your hand made wedding invitations.
